Introduction
A strong sports infrastructure is fundamental to the growth and success of athletes and the sporting community. In Gujarat, sportspersons have not only excelled in their disciplines but have actively contributed to the enhancement of sports facilities and infrastructure. Their involvement spans advocacy, collaboration in development projects, and direct participation in establishing training centers and academies. This blog explores how Gujarat’s sportspersons are shaping the sports infrastructure landscape in the state.
Contributions Toward Building Sports Facilities
Many prominent sportspersons from Gujarat have spearheaded or supported initiatives to build and upgrade sports complexes, training academies, and specialized institutions. Their credibility and insights help in designing athlete-friendly facilities with state-of-the-art equipment and amenities. For instance, former athletes have actively contributed to the development of District Level Sports Schools (DLSS), which provide free sports education and training to selected students across 41 schools statewide. Athletes have also been instrumental in lobbying for government and private sector investments that have resulted in over Rs 900 crore being invested in new sports infrastructure across districts, schools, and universities. These include multipurpose complexes, synthetic tracks, swimming pools, gyms, and residential sports hostels equipped with scientific training and medical care.
Kiran More Cricket Academy
Founded in 1996 by legendary Indian wicketkeeper and former national selector Kiran More, the Kiran More Cricket Academy in Vadodara is one of India's premier training grounds for aspiring cricketers.
Landmark Projects and Collaborations
Gujarat is home to ambitious infrastructure projects like the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, spanning over 300 acres and featuring multiple world-class sporting venues. This enclave, adjacent to the Narendra Modi Stadium, is planned to be an Olympic-grade facility, supporting India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games. Sportspersons have collaborated closely with government authorities, the Sports Authority of Gujarat, and private stakeholders to realize such infrastructure projects. They also mentor young athletes training in these centers, integrating their experience with facilities that support holistic athlete development.
Fun Fact: Gujarat is home to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which isn't just the largest cricket stadium in the world; it also features a unique "360-degree LED light system" on the roof instead of traditional floodlight towers to eliminate shadows on the pitch.
Achievements and Future Prospects
The collective efforts have expanded Gujarat’s sports complexes from just three in 2002 to 24 currently operational, with many more under construction. This growth is enabling better access to professional coaching and competition exposure, creating an environment conducive to nurturing champions. The state government’s vision, reinforced by the involvement of sportspersons, includes hosting international events such as the 2030 Commonwealth Games and preparing for the global stage, such as the Olympics. This infrastructure foundation forms a critical pillar for Gujarat’s ongoing sports revolution.
